Roger Bushell (1910–1944) was a pilot, prisoner of war, and mastermind of the ‘Great Escape’ from Stalag Luft III in March 1944. Murdered by the Gestapo for his actions, Bushell’s story inspired Richard Attenborough’s character in the 1963 film The Great Escape.
