Fisher, MD Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is proud to announce that Michael J. Fisher, MD, Chief of the Section of Neuro-Oncology and Director of the Neurofibromatosis (NF) Program at CHOP, has received the 2026 Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award. The honor was presented at the CTF NF Conference in June in Denver, Colorado.The Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award recognizes members of the NF community whose lifelong contributions have advanced NF research or clinical care. Named for the German physician who first described what is now known as neurofibromatosis type 1(NF1), the award honors individuals whose work has had a lasting impact on the field. Over more than two decades of leadership within the NF Clinical Trials Consortium, including the last eight years as consortium chair, Dr. Fisher has played a pivotal role in advancing pediatric neuro-oncology and NF research. Through his leadership in clinical trials, biomarker development, collaborative research, and mentorship of the next generation of NF clinicians and researchers, he has expanded the understanding of NF1-associated tumors and strengthened the clinical research infrastructure needed to develop new therapies and improve care for patients.At CHOP, Dr. Fisher has overseen the expansion of the hospital’s multidisciplinary Neurofibromatosis Program, which provides care to more than 600 unique patients per year. The program now includes more than 50 physicians, psychologists and neuropsychologists, along with a multidisciplinary team of nurse practitioners, nurse navigators, social workers, education coordinators, psychometrists and program coordinators who support patients and their families. CHOP also has a world-class NF research program with dedicated research staff, a broad array of clinical trials options and other clinical research studies, and an active laboratory program with a focus on developing novel therapies for those affected by NF.Learn more about the award here.
